The sales of records have seen a dramatic increase in recent years, its not all due to the edgy indie scene however, its much more telling. Album art in the 80s, was one of the only ways many artist could show a consumer their aesthetic, a small window to market the album. Outside of the western world, in 1980s Japan, magazine covers were the go to marketing tool, consumers would chose an artist to listen to, often on the aesthetic of the cover. Artists such as Japan, Robert Fripp and David Sylvian found major success with this method, whilst only having somewhat of a cult following in the UK.

With digital streaming being the powerhouse of music consumption, and the massive amount of independent artists releasing music, having a unique and tailor made album cover is more relevant than ever.

Album art can make or break an album, displayed here are some classic designs as well as an installation from the Arctic Monkeys, displayed in Sheffield to promote their album Tranquillity Base Hotel + Casino.
